Flowering Plants for Christmas
A number of flowering pot plants are available during the holiday season. They’re mostly used for displaying indoors.
The Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) is a favorite for this season. During 2017, a new variety called Winterbells hellebore was introduced. Winterbells is more tolerant of heat, which means it will bloom much longer than most other hellebores, possibly as long as six months or so. This pot plant can be planted outdoors in shady perennial beds.
For the 2018 holiday season, do look for the new double flowering amaryllis. Dancing Queen is one example. These varieties are sold in attractive ceramic planters. They’re suitable for novice gardeners. All the gardener needs to do is to unwrap the pot, add water, and place the pot in a sunny window. These are a perfect holiday gift for gardeners. One variety has lovely double, pastel pink blooms, while another one bears double white flowers.
When it comes to poinsettias, the reds and whites continue to be the most popular color. This helps to explain why it is harder to find the ones in novelty colors. My favorites are by far the creams and the creamy pink/white variegated ones. With proper care, I’ve had these retain their color for five months or more. All they need is a moist soil and good light.
The vividly colored cyclamens are often sold for the holidays. Both the foliage and the blossoms are so attractive. These flowers are very sensitive to heat, so keep them in a cool spot if possible.
It hardly seems like Christmas if some of the striking Christmas cactus aren’t on display. The blooms come in a wide array of colors with the vivid reds and rich reddish-pinks being widely available. My favorites remain the white flowered ones. As their flowers age, they do develop a slight pink blush. Christmas cactus plants are almost fool proof so long as they receive enough light.
There are two other groups of flowering plants that can add a touch of beauty for the holidays. These are the brightly colored bromeliads and the kalanchoes. They bring long lasting color for weeks and weeks. After they finish blooming, these can be grown as house plants. When given proper care, they can rebloom.
