Meditation Mount is Re-Opening!
On December 8, 2017, the Thomas Fire raged across Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. One of the victims of this inferno was a local retreat center in Ojai, California, known as Meditation Mount. Those who had previously visited the complex mourned for the loss of a unique and beautiful place, one that offered relaxation, a chance to commune with the natural world, and a place to learn and practice group meditation.

The idea behind Meditation Mount, founded in 1971, is three-fold. The organization seeks to practice wise land stewardship through its International Garden of Peace. It also offers educational programs for those interested in learning different forms of meditation. As part of a global network of meditation centers, the Mount intends to provide service to the world and to all humanity through its meditation programs.

It’s been two years since the fire, and Meditation Mount, like many other endangered places in the area, is on the verge of re-opening, better than ever before. The foundation’s caretakers and leaders recognized this calamity as a hidden opportunity to upgrade the facilities. The center qualified for assistance from the Center for Employment Training, a local organization that exists to serve those who have problems locating jobs, and Meditation Mount’s Board of Directors worked with trainees to re-build from the ground up. Destroyed buildings were re-constructed, while less badly damaged ones were refurbished. Now, it is time for the renewed facility to open its doors to the public.

While the setting is still closed as of December 2019, the Mount is getting ready to offer tours to those interested in discovering what’s now available. One of the web pages for the foundation offers a sign-up for upcoming dates. The Mount specifies that it does not share this information with any other organization.

Once Meditation Mount fully re-opens, it will pick up past programs enjoyed by so many visitors. These include classes in introductory meditation, programs for meditation on the full moon, and meditative walks on the premises. The Meditation Room will also be available for those who simply want to visit and pursue personal practice at the facilities.

Different facilities at the Mount will also be available on a rental basis. Retreats, weekend workshops, and even weddings can all be planned here. The website offers a list of other Ojai businesses that can help to make reality from an event idea.
